DynaView Helps School Officials Prevent a Columbine-Style Plan

A network-based video surveillance system at Long Island's Connetquot Central School District, in Bohemia, NY, helped stop two teenagers who intended to carry out a Columbine High School-style massacre inside the local high school.

The teenagers were quickly apprehended and charged after two individuals delivered a handwritten journal detailing the teenagers’ plans to attack school officials at the high school. “The district's DynaView/Edge NVR (Network Video Recorder) enabled school officials to react quickly”, says Don Flynn, coordinator of school’s security services. “We were able to protect the approximately six-hundred students and staff members, who were in the building for summer school and camp”, Flynn says.

"During the investigation, many questions demanded answers. The first was how the journal came into the possession of school officials. “The video cameras provided an evidential timeline, as well as enabling us to react quickly upon the receipt of the information",  Flynn says. When the individuals brought the journal to the high school office, staff members took it directly school principal, who immediately notified Flynn's office, who, in-turn contacted police.
Better Quality and Scalability

The district began implementing the DynaView/Edge NVR network-based surveillance system in 2006 and now has forty-five cameras installed. The DynaView/Edge NVR can record and store ten times more video, with a significantly better picture quality, than the traditional DVR that the school replaced. The cameras are "intelligent network devices" that make use of the school's wide area network for  connection to the centrally located NVR at the high school, according to David Antar, president of IP Video Corp., which sells, installs and supports DynaView surveillance products. The DynaView system provides for unlimited scalability, which easily allows cameras to be added.  DynaView can also interoperate with video analytic applications as well as a number of other security and facility management and security systems such as access control system and water level controls, used in boiler rooms to protect property.
Not only can the principals at Connetquot schools monitor cameras while in their building, designated staff members can be authorized to view cameras from their homes. The district monitors the cameras 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, obtaining real time information which can be immediately relayed to patrolling security officers. "We use the system proactively, not reactively," Flynn adds. “The DynaView NVR helps us protect lives and has exonerated the district in a number of civil liability cases, such as fights and claims of injuries on school property”, he says.
